X-Ray Sources, Archival Plates, Optical Identifications

Scientific paper

The astronomical archival plates represent a valuable tool for optical identifications and analyses of X-ray sources of various physical nature. These plates provide suitable database for their optical identifications and further optical analyses. We report on the preliminary results of analyses of selected X-ray sources (RXJ1313.2-3259, XTE J2123-058) on archival UKSTU plates located at the Royal Observatory Edinburgh, UK. These plates achieve limiting magnitudes between 19 and 23. We show that these archival plates represent a unique database to generate long-term light curves over tens of years even for sources with faint optical counterparts. We discuss the impact of these analyses on further works on optical identifications of newly detected X-ray sources and follow-up optical analyses of both new as well as previously known sources based on these and analogous plates.
