Channel plates (channeltron electron multipliers) are used in conjunction with grazing-incidence telescopes as X-ray image intensifiers and permit the observation of low-intensity X-ray sources. Experimental designs for the channel-plate-aided measurement of soft X-ray sources are described. The resolving power and imaging properties of a channel plate are investigated as functions of working voltage and post-accelerating voltage. Measurements of X-ray quantum yield are performed and the amplification process on channel plate surfaces is investigated. The use of channel plates in rocket-borne and satellite-borne experiments is considered.
