It is shown that the method of multiple coherence functions is suitable for investigating the relationship between the interplanetary magnetic field and the geomagnetic field. The method makes it possible to determine the most stable ranges of this relationship for periods of approximately 12 and 4 hours, as well as the effects of the shift of the maximum in the correlation spectrum when the sign of the azimuthal component of the IMF changes. In addition, the method can be used to construct equivalent current systems, responsible for variations during the main periods in the considered time series.
