Prognoz-7 measurements of the structure of the plasma mantle are analyzed. It is shown that, under conditions of the northward IMF component in the high-latitude magnetosphere projected into the polar cap, clouds of 'standing' plasma are often observed in which the plasma parameters correspond more to the plasma sheet than to the transition region. This indicates that the lines of forces penetrating these clouds are closed and probably participate in convection in the sunward direction.
