Seawater and terrestrial fulvic acids have been investigated with
carbon-13 and proton nuclear magnetic resonance and by i.r.
spectroscopy. The structural differences observed seem to result mainly
from the low abundance of aromatic precursors (i.e. lignin) in seawater
as compared to the terrestrial environment.
