The paper gives a brief review of satellite and rocket probe techniques used for investigating ionospheric irregularities. The probes discussed include Langmuir probes, charged-particle traps, and impedance probes. Previous probe measurements of ion concentrations are noted, and future perspectives for the employment of probes in studying the irregular structure of the ionosphere are outlined.
