The measurement of electric field strength (EFS) in a rarefied plasma is examined theoretically with reference to space-probe (e.g. Vega) measurements in the interplanetary medium. It is shown that short-baseline measurements of EFS in interplanetary space always yield a result that is greater than the true value, and can be 1.5 times greater than the true value. This finding is verified by a comparision with Prognoz-10 measurements of the strength of a quasi-steady electric field associated with interplanetary shock wave propagation.
