The Venera-12 descent module was equipped with an aerosol collector and X-ray equipment for analyzing the element composition of the aerosol. The measuring equipment and method are described, and preliminary results on the element composition and vertical distribution over the planetary surface of aerosols in the Venus cloud layer are presented. The data indicate that the main components of the aerosol are chlorine compounds and (to a significantly lesser degree) sulfur compounds.
