A new general theory is described of circulation in planetary atmospheres, one developed on the basis of consistent use of similarity and dimensional arguments supplemented by energy and thermodynamic considerations. The causes and nature of motions of various scales are discussed, observational, numerical, and laboratory methods of studying meteorological fields are described, and a survey is given of astronomical and atmospheric parameters for various planets of the solar system.
