BeppoSAX was a major mission of the Italian Space Agency with Dutch participation. The key role of the BeppoSAX satellite for the great progress of the high energy astrophysics in the last 6 years, is widely recognized. The discovery of the first X-ray afterglow of Gamma Ray Bursts (GRB) is a merit of BeppoSAX (Costa et al. 1997), like its key role in fixing the cosmological distance scale of GRBs (Metzger et al. 1997). But this is only one of the fields in which BeppoSAX has successfully operated. Indeed the mission has provided unique results on many classes of celestial X-ray sources. In this paper I discuss the unique capabilities of BeppoSAX and I review some highlight results obtained from observations of Galactic X-ray binaries.
