The successes and shortcomings of the classical, hot big bang model of the universe's origin are evaluated, with a view to efforts made thus far to include concepts from particle physics in a description of the early universe. Attention is given to stellar evolution's basis in the fusion reaction, explosive nucleosynthesis, the relationship of such cosmological observations as the Hubble constant and the 3 K cosmic blackbody radiation background to the big bang model, and the persistent problems of the universal horizon, 'flatness', and the monopole. A quantitative account of the inflationary universe is given en route to consideration of questions regarding the formation of the universe's large-scale structure.
