Attention is given to the basis for intrinsic polarization and extinction in early-type stars with emissions, due to the X-ray irradiation of silicate grains. 'Solid state' features in detailed model calculations cannot be ignored, since the mutual interactions between irradiation and temperature effects are useful in the understanding of such general problems as the cosmological.
