In the course of a four-week monitoring program in February 1990 we detected several rapid outbursts in the BL Lac object 0954+658. Although the total duration of individual events was less than 4 days, the brightness increased by more than a factor of 6 at 650 nm. Similar variations had earlier been discovered in a small sample of BL Lac objects (Wagner 1991). The shapes of the outbursts reported here have light curves that are very similar to one another. They follow exponentials with almost identical e-folding times of about 6.4 hours; the rising- and decay- time-scales are similar. The variations are most probably intrinsic. We argue that the outbursts are probably not caused by a flaring component, whose particles could not cool fast enough to produce a decay as rapid as observed. Instead, the variations might be due to geometric effects which would be able to produce light curves invariant under time reversal. Radio measurements performed simultaneously have gaps during the two major outbursts seen in the optical waveband, limiting our ability to show the presence or absence of optical-radio correlations. However, during an earlier one-week monitoring campaign in May 1989 the radio and optical light curves were very similar. This leads us to conclude that 0954+658 probably displays rapid intrinsic radio variations, in addition to the well established interstellar scintillation on somewhat longer time scales.
