A theoretical study shows that element diffusion in the intergalactic gas may have significantly enhanced the deuterium, helium, and lithium abundance in the core regions of rich clusters of galaxies. The dynamics of the diffusion process is investigated, and it is shown that the sedimentation mechanism will operate most efficiently (on a time scale of the order of 10 to the 16th sec) for deuterium, helium, and lithium. It is noted that helium enhancement might affect the brightness profile of intracluster X-rays and could weaken the background radiation observed toward clusters. A numerical solution is obtained for the intracluster gas, and magnetic-field effects are taken into account.
