The IUE studies of abundance, energetic events in the interstellar medium, highly ionized gas in the galactic disk, and the galactic halo are described. Abundance studies suggest that the degree of depletion of refractory elements is well correlated with the average line of sight density of the gas. Zinc could be used as a tracer of the metallicity of the gas. The role played by supernovae explosions and mass loss winds from early stars in regulating the energy balance and motions of the interstellar medium was studied by observing the shocked gas from these events. Surveys of CIV and SIV absorption lines in early stars support the hypothesis that these species were formed primarily by photoionization in circumstellar matter. The influence of tidal interaction between the Milky way and its companions in the Magellanic Clouds was studied.
