It is pointed out that the presence of formic acid in the dark clouds of the Galaxy appears as a necessary condition for the possible existence of amino acids. An emission line corresponding to a frequency of 4916.312 MHz has been observed with the aid of a 100-m radio telescope during two independent observational periods. The spectral line, which is emitted continuously by the molecular cloud Sagittarius B2, has been assigned to a rotational transition of the formic-acid molecule.
