Saslaw and Gaustad have suggested that the particles in interstellar
dust clouds are diamond grains and that the diamonds in meteorites could
have formed in the early solar system perhaps by shock
waves1. Otherwise the interstellar particles have been
interpreted as graphite (ref. 2, for example).
