Detailed calculations of the expansion of a space-faring/colonising civilisation are presented. Assuming the population growth rate is 0.005 per yr, the emigration rate is 0.0003 per yr, the number density of useful stars is 0.015 per cubic parsec and that emigration occurs only when the population supported by a single star exceeds half the optimum value, the effective wave velocity is 5.7 percent of the ship speed.
