The mechanism by which molecular hydrogen in interstellar space is formed is investigated with reference to recombination reactions on grains. The usually cited rate coefficient k approximately equal to 10 to the -17th cu cm per sec is considered an overestimate, since two-body gas phase reactions are not sufficient by themselves to account for observed H2 abundances. A chemisorption mechanism is proposed, whereby hydrogen reacts with transition metal grains. The resulting catalysis reaction is able to produce as much H2 as the theoretical maximum predicted for cold ice grains, even though the metal grains are less abundant. The catalytic production of H2 on Fe surfaces is described by way of illustration, with attention to rates of desorption
