Scientific paper

Radio spectroscopic evidence of complex organic molecules existing in interstellar space, in comet tails, and in meteorites is reviewed and its importance is assessed. The molecules and free radicals discovered today (CO, H, OH, NH3, CN, H2CO, CS, HCN, or with H substituted by deuterium or tritium) are discussed, including spontaneous maser action and some transitions not yet observed in the laboratory. Reactions in stellar photospheres, the photochemistry of relevant molecules, and special features of cometary molecules are dealt with. The evidence is under study for inferences on nucleosynthesis, cosmological theories, distribution of atoms and molecules in the universe, and spontaneous formation of amino acids.
