The merging of current ropes, a problem concerned with processes of magnetic field line reconnection, is studied. A series of experiments with a forced formation of magnetic islands is described. The results show that the magnetic field structure, which is formed when two magnetic fluxes emerge nearby, depends fundamentally on the history of its production and on the rates of reconnection and merging processes. In particular, similar processes are able to take effect in the solar atmosphere. Three stages can be identified in the merging of magnetic islands: a slow, fast and a relaxation stage.
