High-resolution satellite radio-beacon measurements indicated the presence of large-scale (50-100 km) irregularities in the high-latitude F-region. The observed increase in the intensity of signal amplitude fluctuations in the presence of layer-height variations can be explained by the amplification of small-scale electron-density fluctuations by large-scale density gradients of the ionospheric plasma.
