It is shown that previous interpretations of observed vibration-rotation transitions of SiO from the expanding circumstellar envelope of VY Canis Majoris, in terms of line formation in a thin gas shell surrounding an opaque core of dust which emits a continuous spectrum, is the cause of the apparent stellar velocity displacement derived from the 8-micron lines by 14 km/sec from the value based on (1) the v = zero, J = 2-1 SiO line and (2) the midpoint of the OH maser emission. A model of line formation in which emission from the entire envelope contributes to the emergent profile precludes the previous displacement, and obviates the postulation of asymmetries in the envelope. Agreement is also obtained with IR continuum studies.
