Salient features of scattering in optically thin circumstellar envelopes are discussed as a means of assisting the interpretation of polarimetric data on early-type emission-line stars. The observations are found generally to support an optically thin treatment for the continuum polarization. It is shown that the envelopes of Be shell stars exhibit a range of oblatenesses and densities but that most manifest evidence of axial symmetry even over prolonged time spans and large variations in polarization. Those stars exhibiting polarimetric evidence of nonaxisymmetric distributions are generally identified as binary systems; it is noted that several giants and supergiants with variable polarization, such as Mu Sgr, may also fall into this category. Departures of line polarization values from the expected depolarization results of unpolarized emission are interpreted as consequences of line absorption and emission in envelopes.
