The possible causes of positive disturbances of the midlatitude F2-region, observed during periods of moderate magnetic activity, are discussed. Numerical calculations show that the most probable mechanism for the formation of positive disturbances is the interaction of pulsed gravity waves, generated during substorms, with F2-region plasma. As in the case of the positive phase of an ionospheric substorm, the disturbance is caused by motion of neutral gas towards the equator.
