The stratification of nightglow in the 557.7-nm line (the first emission layer) at heights from 80 to 100 km was repeatedly observed visually from Salyut-6 fronm Dec. 12, 1977 to March 16, 1978. In the present work it is suggested that the observed stratification of glow in the lower thermosphere can be explained as due to the presence of disturbances in the neutral composition of the atmosphere caused by three-dimensional Rossby solitons.
