The paper investigates the extent of the control exerted by the north-south component of interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) on the large-scale plasma structures in the polar cap ionosphere, using data from spaced-receiver scintillation measurements at Thule and Sondrestrom (Greenland) obtained with the 250-MHz transmissions from quasi-geostationary polar beacon satellites. Results clearly demonstrate that the strength of F region irregularities, their anisotropy, and drifts within the polar cap are all sensitively controlled by the IMF.
