A multidisciplinary approach is developed to provide information on the optical and physical properties of interplanetary dust, its location in space, its origin and dynamics, and its contribution to the astronomical background radiation in the infrared. This approach makes use of ground-based, Earth-orbital, and deep-space probe observations of zodiacal light; development and use of inversion techniques to derive information on particle properties and distribution from zodiacal light observations; analysis of comet tail observations; theoretical calculations and laboratory measurements of scattering by spheroids, cylinders and irregular particles; studies of interplanetary dust dynamics.
