The detection of cosmic dust during the Giotto and Vega 1 and 2 flybys at comet Halley allowed for the first in-situ analysis of cometary dust in space. The time-of-flight mass spectra obtained from the impact ionization clouds generated by the dust impacts provided valuable information about the element abundances of the dust. The results of these studies contributed to recent models to describe the physical properties of cometary and interstellar dust. The recent astrophysical models are briefly described.
