Sq current density profiles (Davis et al., 1967), obtained with a rocket-borne magnetometer off the coast of Peru at 11.00 h local time, on the geomagnetic dip equator, and with sunspot activity at a minimum (1965), are compared with calculated profiles. A mismatch is found in the current height pattern, but the computed eastward current density is shown to coincide with the observed data. The neutral wind is taken into consideration, and assuming the wind driving force, a height-independent eastward electric field of about 0.6 mV/m is determined. Meridional current flow is also obtained and its effect on the jet current structure is discussed.
