Radiative Transfer

Scientific paper

This article is devoted to the study of the interstellar extinction in spiral galaxies. The method used to solve the radiative transfer equation in the presence of absorbing and scattering dust by spherical harmonic functions in plane-parallel geometry is critically reviewed. It is found that with an appropriate number of Legendre polynomials (~=11) the solution is fast and very accurate. Using a realistic dust model of the mean galactic interstellar medium, we have studied the properties of the internal extinction in two models, aimed at simulating galactic-like discs. The extinction values, as a function of the wavelength and consequently the colour excesses we have found, are compared with those obtained by other authors in similar structures. We have made our first attempt at understanding the general behaviour of the internal extinction and of the geometrical thickness of discs in a large sample of spiral galaxies.
