Data from 12 magnetic observatories for the period 1907-1966 are used to examine the internal and external parts of the field of 60-year geomagnetic variations. It is shown that almost 80% of the 60-year variation originates inside the earth (this agrees with the literature on the nature of the fundamental components of secular geomagnetic variations). The view that the 60-year variation is the result of a process concentrated in a region near the core-mantle boundary is not confirmed.
