Consideration is given to various tests for the presence of an absorbing medium in spiral galaxies: the dependence of the central surface brightness of disks on inclination; the brightness of overlapping galaxies; and the variation of galaxies' isophotal radii with increasing inclination to the line of sight. It is shown that the nuclear regions of spiral galaxies are optically thick. However, absorption decreases rapidly with distance from the center, and at r of about 0.5R(25) the total absorption is less than 1 mag.
