We report on RXTE observations of the 377 Hz accretion-powered millisecond pulsar HETE J1900.1-2455. The X-ray source has remained active for over a year, in contrast to the short (of order weeks) outburst duration of the other known accretion-powered millisecond pulsars. Millisecond pulsations were detected only intermittently during the first two months of the outburst, with abrupt increases in the pulsed amplitude following each thermonuclear X-ray burst. After this period, pulsations were no longer detectable. HETE J1900.1-2455 also exhibited several excursions from the hard "island-state" region of the X-ray color-color diagram, a behavior that has not been seen in other accretion-powered millisecond pulsars. While the early observations of the source were generally typical of millisecond X-ray pulsars, its more recent behavior has been indistinguishable from that of non-pulsing low-mass X-ray binaries at low accretion rates. HETE J1900.1-2455 could therefore provide important clues linking the two classes of object and help explain the observation that only a small fraction of low-mass X-ray binaries are persistent pulsators.
