A new content course for elementary education majors has been developed at Western Kentucky University (WKU). The course is designed specifically to include the various content areas of mathematics and science (particularly physics and astronomy, biology, chemistry, and geography and geology) and to utilize current instructional technologies. The course is organized around the theme of the environment. Having participated in a NASA Project NOVA workshop, our team determined that this type of course would provide students a way to connect math and science content with "real world" situations and provide them with a model for using current technologies to teach those connections. While the course content correlates with all four of NASA's Strategic Enterprises, the astronomy content is most closely related to the Space Science Enterprise. Students learn about the Earth's various cycles while exploring the Sun-Earth connection. Certain environmental concerns are addressed through comparison of the Earth to other planets.
