Various models of the earth gravitational field are compared as a function of the order, rather than the degree, of their harmonic geopotential coefficients. Mutual comparisons of eleven models are performed by the evaluation of lumped geopotential coefficients representing the linear combination of the individual harmonic coefficients with new resonant satellite results for orbital inclinations from 30 to 140 deg. Differences between the lumped values are found to be greater than expected, particularly at orders less than 10, where the earth models are believed to be well determined. It is shown that the truncations of various earth models at different maximum degree can effect the values of the lumped coefficients by not more than 10% if at least five harmonic coefficients are available for the order in question.
