Four precipitation estimates were intercompared from their spatial and temporal variability point of view. Two of the products are observational based and the other two are model based assimilation products. An EOF analysis technique was applied to decompose the data into various temporal and spatial modes. All four show similar spatial structure on annual and interannual time scales over continental regions, but differences exist over oceanic regions and observational based products show larger amplitudes. The first three EOF modes together explain 49.4% of the variance.
