The isotropic and anisotropic diffusion models suggested by Parker (1963) and Burlaga (1967) have been compared and an attempt has been made to test the appropriateness of the models in explaining the time history of recently observed GLEs. It is inferred that for these GLEs where the magnitude of the anisotropy is greater than or equal to 50 percent, the anisotropic diffusion model shows better correspondence with the intensity time profile, whereas, for values less than 50 percent both models show similar behavior. Furthermore, if the anisotropy is approximately 100 percent, where the anisotropy persists for a long time after the onset of the phase or during almost the entire phase, both the models are inadequate in explaining the intensity-time profile.
