A method of computing the H-gamma equivalent width on objective-prism plates is proposed in order to determine the absolute magnitude of the Small Magellanic Cloud star members. An interferential filter is used to reduce spectral overlappings and the density of the plate background. A high-precision two-axis digitalized microdensitometer is described, whose computer compatibility enables it to be used in conjunction with elaborate programs to obtain precise equivalent widths. The method of determining the equivalent widths is discussed in terms of setting of spectra, recording, measure of plate background, density-intensity transformatio2, determination of the spectra continuum, smoothing, and use of Gaussian curves to compute the equivalent widths. The computed H-gamma equivalent widths of 50 standard stars in both hemispheres are presented, showing good agreement with those obtained with slit spectrographs of higher dispersion.
