An object like a neutron star, whose crust and possibly core have a lattice structure and which is in close orbit around a black hole, gets deformed, fractures, or breaks up due to tidal interaction with the black hole. To analyze this, the elastic deformations of such orbiting components are discussed. The equation of geodesic deviation for an infinitesimal incompressible homogeneous self-gravitating object in a circular equatorial orbit around a black hole is considered in a slightly generalized form. The elastic structure is specified by the linear theory of elasticity, and Navier's phenomenological criterion of fracture is assumed. It is found that the mode of fracture of the orbiting body in stable circular orbits around a Schwarzschild black hole is similar qualitatively to that for a Kerr black hole. In the case of vanishing modulus of rigidity, the earlier results for fluid bodies are recovered.
