The phenomenon of acceleration of mass outflows from red giants is discussed. IT is shown that radiation pressure on growing grains cannot explain the observed radial increase in the outflow velocity, at least in extreme cases such as VX Sagittarii. It is shown, however, that secondary IR emission by dust might account for the observed gradient, if we assume an appropriate temperature field, and hence such a gradient must be common to many red giants.
