A pathway by which nitrogen removal may occur during petroleum genesis is explored. It is shown that organically bound nitrogen in a kerogen pyrolyzate is readily adsorbed by several common clays and that basic compounds are preferentially retained relative to neutral species. The activity of the minerals correlates with their ion exchange capacity and the polarizability of the exchangeable cation. Montmorillonite, which has previously been implicated in the catalytic reactions contributing to petroleum formation, is the most effective adsorbent.
