Materials choice for space applications is not only defined by the primary application requirements, such as structural integrity or electrical characteristics but also by the need to survive the sometimes extreme or unusual environmental conditions that can be encountered during the lifetime of a material. Some of these environments are natural such as Electromagnetic Solar Radiation e.g. IR, Vis, (V)UV, X-ray...; Particles e.g. neutrals such as Atomic Oxygen, charged ones such as e~, p+; Micrometeoroids,.... Others are induced e.g. contamination, man made debris ... Outputs of the modelisation of these different environments can be of a great interest to the material engineer both during his pre- and post flight activities. Material selection in the design phase will take into account the assumed environmental exposure conditions as well as the specific spacecraft requirements, such as expected lifetime, charging restrictions, BOL and EOL temperatures, cleanliness.... A good knowledge of the different environments can therefore reduce the needs for extra safety margins. Post flight materials investigations, such as performed on e.g. LDEF, EURECA and HST are of interest in increasing the knowledge of the effects of the exposure conditions. The data from environmental models are brought toghether with the data on the material/environment interaction obtained in laboratory or during flight exposure, in order to achieve a confidence in the utilisation of a material for a given application. Limitations in this approach however are due to uncertainties in the modelisation, efficiency of material/environment interaction and on the lack of knowledge of the combined environment effects. The present paper will show, through the help of real life examples, how the knowledge of the environment is of great importance for material selection and post flight evaluation.
