Comparison between intensive VLBI monitoring programs and relativistic time-dependent hydrodynamical and emission simulations has proven the value of such computations for interpreting observations of actual sources. The observed inner jet emission structure is shown to be greatly determined by the non-linear hydrodynamical evolution of traveling perturbations interacting with the underlying jet and external medium. Monthly observations of the radio galaxy 3C 120 spanning for more than two years have revealed that multiple jet features (trailing components) can be observed to emerge from the hydrodynamical evolution of superluminal components along the jet.
