Observations are reported which show that short-period variations in the intensity of comet Kohoutek were probably due to changes in its surface brightness, and thus originated in the tail. The period of the oscillations correlates with the 300 sec period of the solar photosphere and corona. Both measurements of the comet's gradual increase in brightness and of its short-period oscillations match functions of sun-comet distance better than functions of earth-comet distance.-
