It is pointed out that the model of a randomly modulated phase screen is widely used in many branches of physics to study the intensity fluctuations which arise when a wave propagates through an irregular environment such as the ionosphere or atmospheric layers, or is scattered by a rough surface such as the sea surface. A phase changing screen is well suited for modelling these situations. There remain a number of questions concerning the deeply modulated phase screen considered. The present investigation has the objective to study several of these questions. Attention is given to the phase spectrum of the screen, the intensity fluctuation spectrum, the limiting case when the length scale L is allowed to become infinitely large, and the evaluation of the spectrum of intensity fluctuations. Good agreement is demonstrated between numerical results for a one-dimensional phase screen and the detailed deep modulation results considered.
