Intense ionospheric disturbances with a spatial scale of 1-10 km at heights of 900 km have been studied by the Intercosmos-Bolgaria-1300 satellite. Localized disturbances were found to be characterized by the appearance of transverse electric fields of high amplitude (up to 250 mV/m), small-scale eddy motions of the ionospheric plasma with velocities up to 4.5 km/s, narrow (5-10 km) current sheets with a density up to 0.0001 micro-A/sq m, bursts of precipitating 1-keV electrons, density variations of the ionospheric plasma, and an appreciable increase in wave activity. Attention is given to possible mechanisms responsible for small-scale electric-field discontinuities, and associated phenomena, as well as to their connection with electrostatic shock waves detected at high altitudes and auroral arcs. The observed phenomena are best described by an electromagnetic model, taking into account the effects of anomalous resistance.
