The problems of alignment and structural stability associated with very large, multipanel, multisurface optical systems automatically deployable in space are discussed. A sensing system is proposed that measures mirror panel-to-panel mismatch and determines system wavefront as a function of sensor location in the image field. These data are accepted by a central computer control system that deconvolves the control signals. A computer simulation of the sensing and control system is presented, showing the number of iterations required to bring a system into optical adjustment.
