Telescopes: Vibrations
Scientific paper
A periodic vibration in angular velocity of the rotating axes of a telescope is investigated. The vibration showed a sawtooth-like distorted wave form. In order to investigate the cause of the vibration, the authors measured the run-out of the axes, and then disassembled the system and tested the parts separately. As a result it is found that the observed phenomena can be caused by coupling between torsion and bending in the rotating axes. The measurements are satisfactorily explained in the framework of a non-linear system of the elastic deformation of the rotating axes. Finally the authors suggest possible ways of improving the performance of the system.
