The instability of sonic waves of small amplitudes in an expanding stream of the solar wind is analyzed. It is shown that the instability is localized in the subsonic flow region and may be the cause of the increased fluctuation levels observed at distances of 10-20 solar radii in the corona. At larger distances, beyond the point of the supersonic transition, the instability is not observed; in the lower layers of the solar atmosphere, the development of the instability is hindered by viscous effects.
